Natural Function
When a back tooth becomes damaged from decay or fracture beyond a simple filling, the placement of porcelain crowns, inlays, and onlays restore your tooth’s natural function and appearance.
An inlay or onlay is created as a solid piece of porcelain, much like a puzzle-piece, to cover the damaged portion on the inside (inlay) or on top of (onlay) the cusps of back teeth where you chew. These tooth-colored restorations are cemented onto the tooth creating a strong seal that prevents leakage in the future.
If too much of the tooth is missing from fracture or decay, a dental crown will be necessary. Crowns used to made of metal, such as gold. But, newer materials and technologies allow for a custom porcelain cap, made to cover and seal the visible part of a tooth.
A crown is used to protect the tooth's remaining structure, restoring it to normal function. Crown’s also replace missing teeth on bridges or dental implants.
